Saturday 27 April 2019

Tuesday 23rd April 2019 was St Georges Day

The Feast Day of St George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years on 23 April, which was possibly the date of his martyrdom.

Following the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, St George's Day became one of the most important feast days in the English calendar. (English Heritage)

St George was canonised in AD 494 by Pope Gelasius who claimed he was one of those 'whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God'.
St George is also the patron of other things including soldiers, armourers, and farmers

It was in 2014 that I first began using St George's Day for making collections for charities during the time when we, in The Morgan Centenary Roadster 1000 Register were holding All Morgans' Days and fundraising in support of the military charity, Help for Heroes.

My other quest at the time was to try and embarrass the local council in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire to recognise and celebrate St George's Day.

That was a wasted cause I am sad to say.

Since 2015, having relocated to the south coast I have been continuing the process to raise funds for Combat Stress, The Veterans Mental Health Charity along with my friend and Morgan colleague Terry Seymour.

Terry's Morgan ready to leave home for our 2019 collection day.

At 9.30am we set up our stall at Locks Heath Shopping Centre which, with the blessing of Centre Manager, Sarah Cotton and her team, has become our annual venue for the last four years.

This is me chatting to an early customer. Pity about the tree.

Terry encouraging this lady to take a look at the many items that we had on our stall to exchange for a kind donation.

My Morgan is decked with St George's Flags and Terry's is ready to invite those wishing to take a seat inside.

People tend to stand off until they spot our items and then move in to take a closer look.

Many, who have relatives in the services, like to talk about their loved ones and tell us how the charity has helped someone they know.

Others say that they have not heard about Combat Stress before?

Examining the detail while Terry explains its purpose.

Other visitors are interested to know about the Morgan Cars, often having no knowledge of the Marque or that they are still being made in Malvern.

This is the first year that there has been no wind to extend the flags.

A worthy recipient of one of our All Morgans' Day Goody Bags.

Terry explaining about our Bi Annual Morgan Event called All Morgans' Day being held at Blenheim Palace on 7th June next year.

During the lunch time quiet time just before the afternoon rush.

Time for a Coffee and a slice of Nola's delicious fruitcake.

Time for a little fun as Terry gets busy with his Selfies.

His new head dress.

Me sporting my new Combat Stress Cap and Sweatshirt.
I wore them all day to wave my flag, despite the heat.

Lastly, one more, including the Combat Stress Flag.

This copy of our notice, sent for presentation on the Shopping Centre Notice Board, indicates that we collected a magnificent £337.40 in support of Combat Stress with 100% of it going to the charity.
