An Event - An Advert - A Car - 

The History of and Advertising for 
All Morgans' Day

I have to offer an apology for the variety of Font Sizes in this topic. Google insists on altering them as I correct them and save the file.

The concept of All Morgans' Day and Creation of the idea behind these Morgan Car Owners Biannual Social Days Out is down to the creative innovation of David Harris, Founder and President of The Morgan Centenary Roadster 100 Register.


 “Uniquely – 'All Morgans’ Day' - combines a world class venue with three and four wheel Morgan’s old or new”.


An event for all owners of Morgan Cars of all types and vintages and not just for Club Members.


2009

During 2009, the Centenary Year of the Morgan Motor Company, Morgan Sports Car Club Centers were encouraged to put on supporting events in the week before the big celebration weekend at Cheltenham Racecourse.

David, then a member of the Morgan Sports Car Club, Gloucestershire 'SpotMog' Centre, created and organised single handed the first such event which he called ' Morgans at Waddesdon Manor '.


Should anyone cry “foul” people may need reminding of what actually happened that year. Apparently, the local club centre appeared so negative in 2009 having first indicated support and then silence.

With zero help forthcoming in the eight months prior to June 2009, David needed to call on his son Richard to make up their actual “Team of Two” on the day. 

It was grand day out for us during our first visit to stunning National Trust Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, Home of the UK based Rothschild Banking Family.

I don't remember any specific advertisement other than a notice in the club magazine 'whats on' page.

I remember well Richard handing us our Rally Plaque as we novices attended this, our first ever, Morgan Event and slid neatly into our display place in front of the Manor.


David designed this beautiful Rally Plaque for all attendees, sponsored by specialist Morgan Insurer Gott & Wynne.


Barry Wynne of Gott & Wynne has kindly gone on to sponsor Rally Plaques for all of our events since.

This view from the Manor Staircase would determine the Parking Plan for future events. David reminds me that there were 145 Morgans there that day including just two Three Wheelers.

Later during 2009, at the Centenary Weekend, The Morgan Motor Company would launch the Morgan Centenary Roadster 100 


Originally the plan was for 100 individually numbered and almost identical cars built but time and sales performance would prove otherwise. 

Unknown to us, David Harris happened to purchase Series Number 001 from Phil & Joyce Ledgerwood's dealership in Winterton, Lincolnshire. 

We would trade in our 'Lellow Car' and purchase No. 015, The Green Goddess, later in the year from SGT in Taplow, Bucks.

2010

In August 2010 David's active mind would innovate once again and suggested to me that we two should launch 'The Roadster 100 Register' and do this during the MOGMMX weekend held in Buxton during August where there would be many Morgan Owners present among whom may be some others with Roadster 100's.

David sent me some printed Flyers and we posted them through side screens. As is often the case at such events I only managed to meet one owner. 


Seven Roadster 100's were found there and all seven agreed to join us. 

We were well on our way towards our current owners list of over 40.

2011

Davids next idea was that we should approach the Waddesdon Manor team once more and he and I agreed , if permitted, we should hold another social day out there. 
We were welcomed again allowing planning to begin.

We launched our first actual All Morgans' Day on 15th May 2011 and began our new registers annual fundraising for Help for Heroes.


Our first advertisement, which appeared in the MSCC Miscellany Magazine, also announced that we will be supporting the 'Help for Heroes' charity.


The event proved to be even more popular than expected with 220 Morgans on display.



Our Roadster 100's were displayed across the whole front of the Manor. Philip Loring's No. 045 heads this line.


At around the same time we were very fortunate to receive an offer from Helen Thorne, daughter of Morgan Dealer Richard Thorne She was interested in our Register work and would ask her husband to design a logo, originally for our banner.


Helen was also instrumental helping me to try to establish exactly how many Roadster 100's were actually built as no one actually knows? MMC only kept production records by Chassis Number with these being shared with the Morgan +4 model.

She event went to the factory to find the unused Series Number Plates only to find that they had been discarded earlier.

The design was perfect and very soon we were issuing our own Car Badge.

Register Member Steve Pickering produced our magnificent Register Banner which has proved invaluable for reminding event attendees who we are. 

We have a strong association with The Morgan Sports Car Club as members.

We agreed to display the MSCC logo in our adverts as a quid pro quo for allowing this and future All Morgans' Day events to be covered by the MSCC Public Liability Insurance and for advertising the events in Miscellany Magazine.


 Our 2011 Gott & Wynne Donated Rally Plaque once again featuring the sketch of the Manor House.


Our Register had grown in number and 22 owners joined us to produce this stunning display that day.


Our core team had grown during the 2011 event to be just four people when David and I were joined by Philip Loring & the late Dr. Peter Jackson who became our Display Parking Guru's. 


They worked extremely well together using Philips length of rope to keep the cars in line. Together they would park all of the cars efficiently and without delay. 




On the Saturday before the event our stalwart wives beavered away in the hotel barn loft packing the 250 Goody Bags donated to us by Phil & Joyce Ledgerwood.



Our first small trades area consisted of teams from Ledgerwood Morgan and The Morgan Motor Company.



We were also privileged on that day to see one of the first production models of the new Morgan Three Wheeler brought along by MMC, even if there were no other three wheelers with us this time.


Sadly for me, David would be attracted by that stunning Zuralic Red Roadster and traded in No. 001 the following week, only for No. 001 to disappear to somewhere in Germany.


The event news was covered by our Parking Team, Peter and Philip, who between themselves managed to achieve two newsworthy pages in the MSCC Miscellany Magazine.

2012

In 2012, in an attempt to enhance our H4H donations I decided to make a sponsored solo journey of 22 days following the Coastal Roads of Britain.




David decided that another opportunity to further fundraise would be created by holding a second All Morgans' Day on Sunday 24th June that year to welcome me home from my travels.


This event again was David's idea and decided at very short notice. This page above was the only advertisement to be published for us in Miscellany each month.

David continued his role of taking the bookings and sending out the entry tickets with my support in forwarding the donations to Help for Heroes. 

The photo in the advert had been taken during that inaugural event in 2011.


My Roadster 100 was to take centre stage still sporting the sponsors advertising stickers used during the trip.


Our 2012 Rally Plaque, again sponsored by Gott & Wynne this time featured the Help for Heroes Stretcher Design as the background.


Much to my surprise, I was presented with this beautiful plaque by the Register to commemorate the journey.

2014


Our original plan was to only hold our All Morgans' Days on a bi-annual basis. This was so that the event did not become stale in the minds of owners. 


Having already broken that rule in 2012 we quickly reverted to plan and held the next event, again at popular Waddesdon, again in 2014.  



 Our first advert followed the page format of 2012 but, as you can see, in the first line, we got the date wrong and the apostrophe was also missing.

The Apostrophe itself became an early issue all of its own. 10 years later it still is for some who do not yet respect that it is an integral part of the 'All Morgans' Day' brand.


When my first documents containing 'All Morgan's Day ' were circulated I received an urgent message from the then MSCC Travel Officer, who informed me that the apostrophe was incorrect and it should read 'All Morgans' Day' and with respect to his superior knowledge we have retained that format ever since. 



A second advertisement was quickly formed to correct things but this one appear too cluttered. 



Philip stepped up and offered to produced our first proper Advert with a professional appearance which would be used going forward.


We were also able to include the Help for Heroes, now disbanded, direct donation website.



We retained the Help for Heroes Design again for our Rally Plaque.



This particular year happened to be the 100th year that the Morgan Motor Company had been manufacturing cars at their Pickersleigh Road, Malvern Link Factory.


We decided that it would be a great idea to invite MMC Managing Director Steve Morris to the event and present him with a commemorative plaque celebrating both events.

An interesting addition to our Help for Heroes fundraising was John Shaw and his Three Wheeler. John also introduced us to his 'Granddad's Lottery form making another £100 for our donations.

Through his good offices and excellent photos, John had this year presented his first Miscellany Front Cover and also achieved a two pages of coverage of the event.

2016

For three years Waddesdon Manor had provided owners with a superb location and excellent backdrop for photographs. As attendances climbed to reach 280 cars we were wondering how we could cope with higher bookings for 2016.

Just prior to our 2014 event there, The National Trust had decided to move the visitors car park away from the Manor and to move their Entry Ticket Booth with it. 


The net result was they could no longer deal with upwards of 300 display cars bypassing the ticket booth and early in 2016 had made a strategic decision to ban all further Car Events from Waddesdon.


David and I, intent on maintaining All Morgans' Day, researched every Country House located in Southern England looking for one where it would be possible to display cars with a superb photographic backdrop for over 300 cars.


Blenheim Palace was the only place that we could find with this potential but were concerned that there would be a fat fee for the privilege of being there. Having been to a Classic Car Show there the previous year, where we were located in an estate field That would not be suitable to meet our needs.


We approached the Head of Operations, Heather Carter, who proved to be a very helpful and amenable person. 


We were stunned when our proposal was welcomed immediately and it would not cost us one single 1p to use the facilities and grounds.

We were given a date for a Sunday in June that year and told that we could set out our Morgan Displays in The Great Court and on the lawns surrounding the Outer Ha Ha's opposite the lake. 

We did have to move that original day to Sunday 3rd July. Blenheim also holds an International Triathlon annually and the organising committee had to move the event forward due to a reschedule elsewhere in the series.

All Morgans'Day 2016 was thankfully secured.


Also during that year we discovered that Help for Heroes had so many fundraisers that perhaps we should support a different Charity. 


Combat Stress, The Veterans Mental Health Charity was chosen over lunch at Mole Valley Motors during our Surrey Hills Weekend Away.


This was a particularly appropriate choice as we discovered that Help for Heroes and another group of military charities was already supporting Combat Stress with £4m that same year.


Also that year, David attended another event held by MMC and met Dutchman Hermen Pol of Morgan Car Badges. David had proposed that Hermen help us to develop a special Event Car Badge that we could both sell before the event.

Through Hermen we were introduced to his American Badge Designer, Tcherek Kamstra.


Tcherek not only has become a strong friend of All Morgans' Day but her fantastic graphics skills were immediately offered to not only design the Car Badge but also create our 2016 Advertisement.


She also kindly set up our Facebook Page for use in extending our event news coverage.

David and I provided the technical information and Tcherek produced the advert design, the format of which has been retained today. 


I particularly like the way Tcherek uses the Register Logo as the zero in Morgans'



Next came the Car Badge Designs of which quite a few were produced before the final option was chosen





The Roadster 100 Green Version was agreed for sale to just members of the Roadster 100 Register and these would be stamped with the Series Number of the owners cars. 

Tcherek sent me this signed original of the design which is now proudly displayed on my office wall.




The Car Badge Design was also implanted into the 2016 Rally Plaque.


For the first time since our original 2011 event we would give a Goody Bag & Magazine donated by MOG Magazine into which we would also add a Pin Badge based on the Car Badge Design.

Hermen differentiated with his versions of the Car Badge to increase sales to his many collector customers. Tcherek used her advert base to produce these two sales brochures.



This Blue and Red Design proved to be the most popular version.




This year the newly formed MSCC Travel Club joined our event as part of a Tour of The Cotswolds which culminated with visit to our All Morgans' Day.



We also introduced a range of Special Passes to differentiate between those joining us to display their cars ....

With Blenheim being such a large estate we needed a large team to manage affairs on the day.


The popularity of the new Blenheim Palace venue increased our attendees with 400 Morgans displayed around the Great Court and the Grounds. All with a super backdrop for their photographs.

We had also grown a trades area utilising the extra space that Blenheim offered.



12 gazebos formed an intimate area alongside our own Goody Bag distribution centre.



One superb donation of Timing Clocks by Wolf Performance encouraged us to develop a raffle which Terry Seymour undertook to manage and here we have Steve Morris picking tickets and Peter's wife Sonja winning another star prize - The Morgan Travel Bag.



With special thanks to John Barry and his excellent photos we achieved another front cover and two pages in Miscellany.




MOG Magazine had chosen to Link our event report with a feature on the New Morgan Roadster and a Veteran from Help for Heroes.

2018
David Harris decided to step down from his position of Leader of The Roadster 100 Register this year believing that he and I, the oldies, should be replaced by the younger members for continuity of the event and nominated Terry Seymour to take his place.


Terry & I making our first 2018 Planning Visit to Blenheim Palace to again meet with Heather Carter and this time also with her new assistant Julian Newman.




It was during this visit that as Terry and I scanned the Visitor Centre shop for ideas for our next car badge we spotted this logo - The Coat of Arms of The 1st Duke of Marlborough, the Duke who built Blenheim Palace.




With Blenheim also being the birth place of our famous war Time Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, it was strange to bump into this visiting group of Winston & wife Clementine along with Clement Attlee.


 In 1940, Clement Attlee took The Labour Party into the wartime coalition government and served under Winston Churchill, becoming, in 1942, the first person to hold the office of Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.


Chris and Rosemary Attwood would also join the top team when organising our 2018 event to manage the ever expanding bookings process.


Following much debate about its past content, variations of Tcherek's 2016 Advert were cut, cropped and pasted to achieve this modified version for 2018.

In August 2017 the Morgan Motor Company held a two day event called 'Run for the Hills' and for the first time ever we took the opportunity to make a 1000 Flyer advertising drop into the visiting Morgans.

We met with Hermen & Tcherek there and formed the ideas for the design of a 2018 Car Badge based on that Coat of Arms of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.

Once again Tcherek produced a stunning design with both our Green Roadster 100 Version and Hermen's Red Bordered version on a single piece of Artwork


The Factory Versions needed Tcherek's distant but detailed management to achieve the detailed end result.

Needless to say, the design translated perfectly onto our 2018 Rally Plaque.


And again the design is perfect for our Goody Bag face.

These 600 bags were again kindly donated by register member Steve Pickering. 

The event was a fantastic success with over 600 Morgans displayed around the Palace grounds.



The Great Court was full to capacity.

The Trades area was extended with 22 display areas and the Morgan Motor Company even brought along their new Routemaster London Bus.

And another first was the team of supporters from Combat Stress with the local Member of Parliament, The Right Honorable Robert Courts.



We also received a Combat Stress Morgan as a Raffle Prize which was eventually donated to a hospice by its winner.



John Barry once again did us proud as both our official photographer and for achieving another superb Miscellany Front Cover. 

Sadly the apostrophe is missing again. 


I noticed, when reading the photo credits on this page that Miscellany Editor, Charles Neal, had also been a visitor for the first time on this our 5th year.  

MSCC, for the first time, held their MOG18 at the nearby Heythrop Park with the opportunity for attendees to join us on the Sunday. We are not sure how successful this idea proved to be as large numbers arrived without booking or making the requested donations. 


The Raffle was our biggest ever with some stunning prizes but sadly ticket sales were well down on the 2016 level.

2020
While writing this page we are well into our planning and booking process for our 6th Bi Annual All Morgans' Day which will be on Sunday 7th June 2020.


In November 2018, Terry Seymour and I made our first visit to Blenheim to meet with Heather Carter again to set the date for 2020. 
This may seem early but Blenheim is a very popular venue with the need to secure our date early.
Soon after the original date was altered to 7th June to accommodate the Annual Flower Show weekend who wanted our original date. 
In 2016 we were also bumped to accommodate a change in the International Triathlon Calendar.

At the time Blenheim Palace was being prepared for their Christmas Fair.


I like the tree located next to the Cash Machine.

2020 also happens to be the 10th Anniversary of the Morgan Centenary Roadster 100 Register, to give it its full name.


After the first couple of ads appearing in MOG with the apostrophe in the wrong place, we now have our first up and running.

The Blenheim Palace Booking information is unfortunately missing awaiting the pricing structure and the All Morgans' Day Booking Website Link. 

This will give Rosemary some extra administration informing everyone who has already booked with us.

For 2020 we are able to use more of the Great Court as a display area and booking for this have been racing ahead.

Terry is working with Tcherek to create a new Car Badge design for this year.


We held our first official Planning Meeting recently when Carol & Robert Jobson joined our small team.



Nola is also ready with her 9000 raffle tickets so please have your loose change ready for the day.

We are hoping to exceed both the number of Morgans joining us and being able to increase the donations we are able to make to Combat Stress as a result.
