Burnham Beeches are located just north of Slough to the west of London and involve many acres of ancient woodland owned by the City of London. There are Nature Reserves, Open Spaces, Lakes, Many Easy Walks and even Free Roaming Animals within the enclosure. The woods have been used for filming locations for some 'Harry Potter' scenes and 'Robin, Prince of Theives'. The narrow roads throughout the woods used to be public roads but are now gated and safe places to walk. It has become one of our favorite dog walks. There is a Cafe and Toilet Block next to the Information Centre and the Car Parks. Free Maps are available which are useful to first time visitors.
The Old Beech Trees above have been Pollarded.
Pollarding is a pruning system in which the upper branches of a tree are removed, promoting a dense head of foliage and branches. It has been common in Europe since medieval times and is practised today in urban areas worldwide, primarily to maintain trees at a predetermined height (Wikipedia)
It appears that each Lord Mayor of The City of London plants a tree here with its own commemorative plaque to identify it.
This plaque refers to Felix Mendelsosohn.
